Sean Dyche praised Iliman Ndiaye and Jordan Pickford after Everton secured a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
The Toffees fought hard to earn a point against the Premier League champions. They fell behind in the 14th minute when Bernardo Silva scored for Pep Guardiola’s side, who had struggled in their previous 12 matches, losing nine. However, Everton responded with determination, equalizing nine minutes before halftime thanks to a brilliant Ndiaye finish at the back post.
The game could have taken a different turn if Erling Haaland had converted a penalty in the second half, but Pickford outfoxed the City striker in a battle of mind games to keep the score level.
Everton’s 1-1 draw marked their third consecutive stalemate, following goalless draws with Arsenal and Chelsea. Dyche, speaking to Amazon Prime, was impressed with Ndiaye’s skill in scoring and expressed a desire to see more from the Senegal international. He said: “It’s a great touch and finish. The defender doesn’t have time to react, and it catches the goalkeeper off guard with how quickly he does it. It takes a lot of skill, so credit to him.
“He’s got talent. I always talk to him about touch and finish. Goalkeepers want to set themselves, so it’s a tough skill to master. It’s been challenging with the tough teams we’ve faced. I was concerned about this match, but we handled it well. There’s a sense that we can get results, and we managed it well.”
City had a chance to go ahead early in the second half when Everton defender Vitalii Mykolenko was penalized for a late tackle on Savinho. Dyche acknowledged it was a “lazy tackle” from Mykolenko but praised Pickford for saving Haaland’s penalty.
“It was a penalty,” Dyche admitted. “The attacker did well, but Jordan’s performance was excellent for his confidence and his understanding of the coaches’ advice. Ultimately, it’s about his decisions, and he made the right one. I was far from the incident and wasn’t sure how much contact there was. It was a lazy tackle. Myko has been in good form recently, so I’m not going to criticize him.”
