“Frustrating, we let the fans down again, we’re in a sticky patch at the moment”- Lewis Dunk hits out at Brighton issue as fans boo after stalemate with Brentford
Brighton captain Lewis Dunk identified his team’s main issue as they were booed off the pitch after extending their winless run to six Premier League matches with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Brentford.
The Seagulls controlled much of the game on a foggy evening at the Amex Stadium, hitting the woodwork early with Julio Enciso’s effort just four minutes in.
Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken made several crucial saves before being forced off with an injury in the 36th minute. His replacement, Hakon Valdimarsson, was scarcely tested during his Premier League debut.
Brentford, still without an away win in the league this season, had an early goal from Yoane Wissa disallowed for offside following a VAR review, and though they improved in the second half, they rarely posed a serious threat.
Brighton remain in 10th place ahead of their Monday trip to Aston Villa, while Brentford sit one position and two points below them as they prepare for their New Year’s Day clash with Arsenal.
After a poor run of results, Brighton have dropped from second to mid-table, increasing the pressure on head coach Fabian Hurzeler. In his programme notes, Seagulls chief executive Paul Barber urged fans to maintain perspective, revealing that he had received “doom and gloom” emails following the team’s recent 3-1 loss to rivals Crystal Palace.
“We’re in a frustrating patch right now, we can’t get a win,” Dunk told Amazon Prime. “Looking at the games we’ve fallen short in, we’ve dropped the intensity. At the start of the season, we outran teams. The stats show that in the games we won, we ran more than the opposition, and in the games we haven’t won, we ran less.”
“We’ve got top-quality players. We knew they’d defend with numbers, and in the second half, we lost patience and tried to do too much individually.”
One positive for Brighton was the return of Solly March, who had been sidelined for over a year due to a knee injury. March almost marked his comeback with a dramatic winner, narrowly firing over the bar with his left foot from 18 yards in the dying seconds.
“I’m buzzing for Solly March,” Dunk added. “After two ACL injuries and two operations, there were times when he probably wondered if he’d ever make it back.”
