Leicester City will face Manchester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as they aim to recover from a series of heavy defeats in the Premier League.
The Foxes have suffered three crushing losses in recent matches, including a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Newcastle United, followed by 3-0 defeats to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool.
As a result, Leicester have dropped into the relegation zone for the first time since Ruud van Nistelrooy replaced Steve Cooper as manager.
With Wolves appearing to benefit from a new manager bounce, including a recent win over Manchester United, Leicester must turn their form around quickly.
Though beating Manchester City seems a daunting task, the Sky Blues have shown vulnerability with just one win in their last five matches, making them less invincible than usual.
For Leicester to have a chance of an upset, Van Nistelrooy needs to make a key decision regarding James Justin’s role.
Leicester’s biggest issue in the 2024/25 season has been conceding goals, with no team in the Premier League letting in more than the Foxes (tied with Wolves at 40).
A significant factor in this has been Justin’s poor form, particularly in the 3-0 loss to Wolves, where he was the lowest-rated player.
His struggles continued into the Boxing Day match, further highlighting the need for a new full-back in January.
Despite his ongoing poor performances, Justin hasn’t been dropped in 56 days. His last benching came on November 2nd in a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town under Cooper. Van Nistelrooy should consider dropping him for the match against Manchester City.
Currently, with Ricardo Pereira sidelined by injury since November, Leicester lacks a natural replacement for Justin at right-back. However, Hamza Choudhury, who has previously played in that position, could be an option.
Though Choudhury didn’t impress in midfield against Newcastle, it may be worth experimenting with him at right-back against City.
Alternatively, 19-year-old Jayden Joseph, a natural right-back, could be promoted to the senior squad for a chance to feature against Manchester City.
