Nottingham Forest visited Everton for their final Premier League match of 2024, aiming to enter the new year in the top four under Nuno Espirito Santo. The team had enjoyed a strong festive period, securing maximum points in their two previous matches, including a 1-0 win over Tottenham following their victory against Brentford on December 21st.
Forest faced a few challenges ahead of the Everton match, with Ryan Yates suspended due to a fifth yellow card and Murillo picking up an injury during the warm-up. Despite these setbacks, the team started strong, taking an early lead. Morgan Gibbs-White played a key role, assisting Chris Wood, who combined with Anthony Elanga before expertly chipping over goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The second half saw another Forest counterattack seal the win, with Wood finding Gibbs-White again, who finished well past Pickford to secure the three points.
Player Ratings:
Matz Sels (7): The Belgian goalkeeper kept a clean sheet, although Everton’s best efforts were off target, so he had little to do.
Ola Aina (7): Aina was tasked with defending against Everton’s top attacker, Iliman Ndiaye, and was solid, winning all of his tackles.
Morato (8): After Murillo’s injury, Espirito Santo switched to a back four, placing more pressure on Morato, but the Brazilian was outstanding, especially with seven headed clearances in the first half.
Nikola Milenkovic (7): Milenkovic had a quieter afternoon than his partner Morato, as the Everton attack focused more on him, but he stood strong in the second half.
Neco Williams (8): The Welsh left-back was excellent against Jack Harrison, dominating both on the ground and in the air.
Elliot Anderson (7): Anderson took on a more defensive role in midfield due to Yates’ suspension, controlling the game well without pushing forward much.
Nicolas Dominguez (7): Dominguez replaced Yates and performed well in midfield, winning duels and maintaining solid passing accuracy.
Ramon Sosa (7): Sosa made his first start due to Murillo’s injury and struggled to make an impact, but his energy helped Forest press, and he missed a chance late in the first half.
Morgan Gibbs-White (9): Gibbs-White had a quiet first half by his standards but assisted Wood for the opener and scored a beautiful goal to seal the win.
Anthony Elanga (8): Elanga continued his good form with another assist, winning the ball back to help create the second goal.
Chris Wood (10): After three games without scoring, Wood was the star of the match, scoring the opener and assisting Gibbs-White for the second goal.
Substitutes:
Willy Boly (7): Boly came on to deal with Everton’s aerial threat, providing a commanding presence as the hosts launched numerous crosses.
Jota Silva (6): Silva didn’t have much of an impact but made a couple of positive runs as Forest managed the game.
Taiwo Awoniyi (6): Awoniyi worked hard after replacing Wood but didn’t get much of a chance to influence the attack.
Harry Toffolo (7): Toffolo was solid in defense, helping Forest hold onto their clean sheet as Everton bombarded the wide areas.
James Ward-Prowse (6): Ward-Prowse had little opportunity to get involved due to Everton bypassing midfield with their direct approach late in the game.
