Celtic fans erupted in celebration at Parkhead after news of Motherwell’s second goal against Rangers in their Scottish Premiership clash spread throughout the stadium, according to Martin Dowden.
Rangers were held to a 2-2 draw with Motherwell on Sunday (29 December), but it could have been worse as they found themselves two goals down at Fir Park. Robin Propper struggled once again, and many fans are likely to direct some of the blame towards Philippe Clement for his unusual starting lineup.
Reporting live from Celtic Park on the BBC Sport website (29 December, 15:38pm), BBC Scotland journalist Dowden described the Celtic fans’ reactions as they celebrated Nicolas Kuhn’s decisive contribution. “As these home supporters [Celtic] were celebrating Kuhn, the news from Fir Park filtered through to a joyous reception,” Dowden wrote.
“That lead at the top looks set to grow ahead of their trip to Ibrox on Thursday. Everything is falling into place for Celtic, in sharp contrast to their rivals.”
Rangers’ Premiership Hopes All But Gone
While there may not have been much hope left among Rangers fans for their title challenge, the draw against Motherwell seems to have extinguished even the faintest glimmer of optimism.
The team’s recent injury crisis, particularly in defence, has played a significant role in their slump. However, even without key players like Leon Balogun and John Souttar, many feel that Clement should have better prepared the squad in the summer.
Rangers’ decision to replace long-time defender Conor Goldson with Propper has been questioned since the start of the season, and the Dutchman’s performances have not lived up to expectations. The signing, likely part of the club’s cost-cutting measures, has proven to be more of a flop than many anticipated.
Unless Souttar and Balogun recover quickly, or Clement moves to strengthen the defence in January, Rangers may find themselves battling for second place with Aberdeen rather than competing for the title against Celtic.
In other Rangers news, the club has been accused of playing the victim as speculation grows about the next potential casualty at Ibrox.
