“What a REGRET: From Regular Starter to BENCH Warmer” – Former Leicester Star, who scored 12 goals and provided 14 assists in 44 Championship appearances last season to help Leicester clinch the title by one point, now regrets his move to a new club after playing only 55 minutes of Premier League football since joining.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who made the move to Chelsea from Leicester in a £30 million deal, may be regretting his decision to join Stamford Bridge after being consistently overlooked by manager Enzo Maresca. The 26-year-old was a key player for Maresca at Leicester, helping them secure the Championship title last season, but has only played 55 minutes of Premier League football since his arrival at Chelsea.
Dewsbury-Hall’s last Premier League appearance came in early December, when he played the final 11 minutes of Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Southampton. He has since been left out of the squad for matches against Tottenham, Brentford, Everton, Fulham, and Ipswich, missing the latter three due to injury.
The midfielder’s move to Chelsea came after Maresca left Leicester to take charge in London. Dewsbury-Hall had been instrumental in Leicester’s Championship victory, contributing 12 goals and 14 assists in 44 appearances. His arrival at Chelsea was expected to mark the next step in his development, but he has struggled to secure a regular spot in the first team.
Currently, Dewsbury-Hall is behind Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo in the midfield pecking order, with the latter two costing the club a combined £221 million with add-ons. It seems clear that Maresca has not prioritized the Englishman for Premier League action.
While Dewsbury-Hall did feature in five of Chelsea’s six Conference League matches and started both Carabao Cup fixtures, these cup appearances hardly align with his expectations when he joined the club. He likely envisioned himself making an impact in the Premier League, not just in secondary competitions.
With the January transfer window now open, Dewsbury-Hall may consider seeking a move away from Chelsea. Maresca, when asked about the player’s future, admitted he couldn’t guarantee Dewsbury-Hall’s place at Stamford Bridge beyond the window.
“Unfortunately, I cannot say that about Kiernan or anyone in the squad because when the window is open, anything can happen,” Maresca commented. “What I can say is that we are very happy with the way he is working and his performances.”
