Leeds United fans, along with Daniel Farke and the players, left the MKM Stadium feeling frustrated after seeing a 3-1 lead over Hull City slip away, ending in a 3-3 draw.
While Leeds still sit at the top of the Championship table, their once five-point lead has now been reduced to just one. Burnley won their early match against Blackburn Rovers, and Sheffield United triumphed 2-1 at Watford, making it a tough day overall for Leeds.
Hull took the lead with Abu Kamara’s early goal, but Leeds responded strongly after the break. Ao Tanaka and Dan James scored to put Leeds ahead, and Joel Piroe added his 10th league goal of the season, seemingly sealing the win at 3-1. However, Hull rallied, scoring two more goals to earn a deserved point.
Tony Dorigo criticizes Max Wober after Hull’s opener
Hull’s opening goal sparked significant debate on social media, with many fans blaming Illan Meslier for rushing off his line too early, allowing Kamara to lob the ball over him with ease. However, Tony Dorigo suggested the real blame lay with full-back Max Wober. Wober, who replaced Sam Byram in the starting lineup, was caught too far forward when Hull scored, leaving Kamara space to slip behind the Leeds defense.
On LUTV commentary, Dorigo said, “What are we doing at the back? Why aren’t we picking up Kamara? He’s in acres of space on that right-hand side. The ball was a good one, but with that much space, you should be closing them down. But then, just pick up your man. Max Wober, not exactly sure where he was, but Kamara has his chance and takes it well.”
Daniel Farke’s changes explained
Farke made two changes to the starting lineup from the previous game against Blackburn Rovers, bringing in Wober for Byram at left-back and Ethan Ampadu for Pascal Struijk at center-back. It was later revealed that Struijk missed out due to an ankle injury, while Patrick Bamford was sidelined with a hamstring injury. Byram, who had been criticized by fans for his performance against Blackburn, appeared to be dropped.
Although Wober seemed like a better option for this match, he was caught out for Kamara’s goal along with Meslier, in what was a defensive mishap that summed up Leeds’ overall performance.
Next up for Leeds is a home match against League Two Harrogate Town in the FA Cup next Saturday, with kick-off at 5:45pm.
