Efan Ekoku has criticized Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite following the Toffees’ 1-0 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday.
The BBC pundit questioned Branthwaite’s positioning as David Brooks scored, expressing confusion over what the 22-year-old was doing at the moment. Despite the ball being close to him, Branthwaite ducked instead of attempting to clear it with a header, leaving Jordan Pickford helpless as the ball found the back of the net.
Speaking on the Premier League world feed on January 4, Ekoku said: “Branthwaite ducks. Why does he duck? It makes no sense.”
Branthwaite needs to do better as Everton’s top defender
Given his quality, Branthwaite should have done more in that situation. He had a chance to stop the ball from going in, and it was disappointing to see him miss that opportunity. As Everton’s best defender, the 22-year-old will surely face criticism from manager Sean Dyche when he watches the replay of the goal.
It’s hoped that Branthwaite will learn from this mistake, as such errors could cost his team more points in the future.
Despite only losing by one goal, Everton were clearly the inferior side throughout the match. Dyche now faces the task of quickly improving the team’s performances to prove to The Friedkin Group that he is the right man for the job.
