Leeds United may still sit at the top of the Championship table, but their 3-3 draw against Hull City on Saturday highlighted several concerns as they head into the promotion run-in.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime to Ruben Selles’ team, Leeds made a strong comeback early in the second half, with Ao Tanaka, Dan James, and Joel Piroe all finding the back of the net.
Tanaka scored his first goal for Leeds with a stunning long-range shot from nearly 25 yards, while Piroe notched his tenth goal of the season, bringing his total goals and assists to 15 in the current campaign with a well-taken finish.
However, Leeds couldn’t hold onto the lead, with Illan Meslier at fault for both of Hull’s goals. He dropped a header at Joao Pedro’s feet for Hull’s second and was arguably responsible for the first goal in an Abu Kamara brace. Kamara then equalized with a shot from the edge of the area that beat Meslier into the center of the goal.
Ethan Ampadu Sends Message to Leeds Fans After Hull Draw Following the 3-3 draw, Ao Tanaka was the only Leeds player to post on Instagram. However, Leeds captain Ampadu also addressed supporters on his story, acknowledging that the team knew their performance was below par.
He told Leeds fans: “Disappointed, we know it wasn’t good enough from us this weekend. Thank you as always for the support.”
FA Cup Clash May Come at the Perfect Time for Leeds After a grueling run of five games in just two weeks, Leeds can now focus on the FA Cup, which could provide a welcome break from their promotion push.
Leeds will face League Two side Harrogate Town, with Daniel Farke likely to make several changes to his lineup. Karl Darlow is expected to come in for the under-pressure Meslier.
This break comes at an ideal time, as Leeds struggled to hold onto leads in their previous two matches—first drawing with Blackburn after taking a late lead, and then failing to protect a two-goal advantage against Hull. It could be a sign that some of Farke’s regular players are starting to feel the pressure.
At least this weekend, Leeds players can rest and refocus ahead of their upcoming match against Sheffield Wednesday.
