‘I love Everton, but’ – Gary Lineker can’t hide true feelings in brutal on-air introduction
Everton fans likely had little reason to watch Match of the Day on Saturday night. For those who did, former player Gary Lineker provided some comfort, as he seemed to share their frustration.
The Toffees were held to a dismal 1-0 defeat by Bournemouth, failing to register a single shot on target. With only three wins from 19 matches this season, Everton’s struggles continue, having failed to score in eight of their last 10 games.
After a brief period of hope in December, marked by three draws and a win, Everton have now suffered two consecutive defeats, with tensions rising as the new year unfolds.
They are dangerously close to the relegation zone, and their situation worsened on Sunday when Ipswich Town earned a draw against Fulham. Everton now sit 16th in the table, just one point above the drop zone.
Introducing the highlights, Lineker couldn’t hide his disappointment with both the team’s recent performances and their lackluster playing style.
“Everton though, boy,” he said. “In their last 10 games, they’ve failed to score in eight, and honestly, without Jordan Pickford, they’d be in real trouble.”
“I love Everton, I really do, but boy, they’re hard to watch right now.”
The result heaps more pressure on manager Sean Dyche, especially with the recent takeover by The Friedkin Group. With Everton’s next three games at home—starting with Peterborough United in the FA Cup, followed by Premier League fixtures against Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur—the pressure will only intensify.
