“Stephen McGinn Drops Bombshell Verdict on Philippe Clement’s Future After Rangers’ Shocking Draw
Stephen McGinn has suggested that Philippe Clement may not be the right man to lead Rangers forward after their disappointing 3-3 draw with Hibernian.
Rangers started the match well on Sunday (5 January), taking a 2-0 lead after just 19 minutes. However, despite a Hamza Igamane hat-trick giving them a 3-2 lead in the 74th minute, they were forced to settle for a draw when Rocky Bushiri scored an equalizer in the 83rd minute.
Clement has been under intense pressure at Ibrox, and after a crucial 3-0 win over Celtic on Thursday (2 January), the Belgian was expected to build on that success. However, McGinn feels Clement is struggling to make a lasting impact, saying live on BBC Radio Scotland (5 January, 14:04): “I’m not sure how much longer it can go on with Philippe Clement. That wasn’t much of an improvement. Rangers have been inconsistent like that all season.”
McGinn pointed to some of Rangers’ standout performances in Europe, such as wins against Malmo and Olympiacos, but noted that the team’s overall inconsistency remains unchanged.
“Nothing’s really changed for me,” he added. “We shouldn’t be failing to win games like this. It’s really frustrating.”
Clement’s tenure at Rangers has been marked by inconsistency, with his team often unable to back up good results from one game to the next. Given this, many are questioning whether the 50-year-old is the right man to take the club forward, especially with the title race against Celtic looking increasingly unlikely.
“He’ll always have these big moments, like the Celtic win, but the real challenge is to win the league back from Celtic,” McGinn said.
Despite the high of the Old Firm victory, Clement’s inability to secure a solid follow-up result against Hibernian has raised more doubts about his future. Rangers’ early lead against Hibs, combined with the fact they were never behind, makes the draw feel like two points dropped.
McGinn pointed out the pattern of inconsistent results, such as struggles after wins against Malmo and in the cup final. He also criticized Clement’s decision to prioritize the Celtic game over others, saying, “Every game is as important as the other at Rangers, and I don’t know what’s going to change with Philippe Clement in the long term.”
After a week of mixed results, including a 3-0 win against Celtic, Clement is likely safe for now. However, the pressure remains as he faces the ongoing challenge of making Rangers consistently competitive at the highest level.
