A number of Sunderland players are drawing interest from Premier League clubs, but with the Black Cats focused on promotion, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is likely to reject most approaches for his players.
Despite this, Sunderland remains a selling club, as is common in the Championship, which is crucial for competing financially with teams relegated from the Premier League each season.
Having been absent from the top flight for nearly eight years, Sunderland needs to generate revenue. Last summer, they sold Jack Clarke for £20 million in a smart deal, and further sales are expected in 2025.
Currently, Jobe Bellingham is drawing significant attention, with clubs like Arsenal and Crystal Palace linked with him. Additionally, young goalkeeper Matty Young has recently been connected to a surprise Premier League move.
Young, who is on loan at Salford City this season, has impressed with eight clean sheets in 14 appearances. Manchester City is reportedly keeping an eye on him. However, the 18-year-old is contracted to Sunderland until 2028, giving Louis-Dreyfus and the club’s leadership no immediate need to sell.
The Sunderland owner, along with coach Regis Le Bris and others, will be pleased to hear that Young has expressed a desire to stay at the club and eventually become the first-choice goalkeeper.
Speaking to the club, Young said, “I’ve been with Sunderland for over a decade. I’ve supported the club my whole life, and it means the world to me as both a player and a supporter. I want to play for this club in the future, and that’s my goal. I’m working hard to hopefully get my chance, and I’m happy with my progress so far.”
As it stands, Anthony Patterson is Sunderland’s no.1 goalkeeper, and there is interest in him from Premier League clubs, including Manchester United earlier this season. Young could be the natural successor to Patterson at Sunderland, making it unlikely that the club would sell him. This is a sentiment shared by pundit Carlton Palmer.
Speaking to Football League World, Palmer said that Manchester City would need to make an “absurd offer” to pry Young away from Sunderland.
He added, “I doubt Sunderland would sell him unless, of course, Manchester City comes in with an absurd offer. We know how they operate, and Sunderland would reinvest that money elsewhere. But as I said, it would have to be a ridiculous offer to make them sell.”
Interestingly, Young’s current team, Salford City, will play Manchester City in the FA Cup third round this Saturday.
