Alan Brazil has expressed confusion over Rangers’ decision to retain Philippe Clement, suggesting that the club is keeping him due to financial constraints.
Calls for Clement’s dismissal emerged from fans at Dens Park after the team’s 1-1 draw with Dundee, which left Rangers 15 points behind Celtic following the latest Scottish Premiership fixtures.
This came just days after Rangers’ impressive win over Celtic in the derby. Despite this victory, Clement has struggled to build momentum, leading to growing doubts about his future.
After the match, Clement remained confident, insisting he was “200 percent” certain that the club’s board and CEO Patrick Stewart supported him in his role. On the talkSPORT Breakfast Show, Brazil, typically a Celtic supporter, surprisingly showed some sympathy for Clement: “It’s over (the league). He must have thought he had turned a corner.”
He continued, “The cup was an even match—penalties—and Rangers played well. Celtic got battered at Ibrox, let’s be honest.
Then you thought, ‘Do they kick on now?’ I was looking ahead to their Manchester United game in Europe, but it’s been a nightmare since then.”
Co-host Ray Parlour, an Arsenal legend, remarked, “He’s probably on thin ice. A few more bad results and he’ll be gone.”
Brazil speculated, “Maybe they’re keeping him because Rangers are really tight for cash. Really tight. They’ll deny it, but they are.”
Parlour added, “As a neutral, it would be much better if Rangers were closer. But Celtic have run away with it.” Brazil concluded, “It’s over. It’s a classic case of famous last words, but you can’t close that gap now.”
