Harrogate Town manager Simon Weaver expressed his disappointment after his League Two side were not awarded a penalty during their narrow 1-0 FA Cup loss to Leeds United.
The third-round derby was decided by a 59th-minute header from Largie Ramazani in front of nearly 36,000 fans. However, Harrogate felt they should have been awarded a penalty in the 12th minute.
Anthony O’Connor delivered a precise lofted pass to Josh March, who was impeded by Leeds’ Josuha Guilavogui as he attempted to break free on the edge of the box. March went down under clear contact from Guilavogui, but referee James Bell waved play on.
Weaver commented on the incident, saying, “I’d like to think it was a penalty. I asked Josh March, and he said, ‘Oh yes, certainly – he clipped my heels.’ It was a clumsy challenge, and I was disappointed it wasn’t given. If it had been, it would have given us a huge boost and extra confidence.”
Despite the penalty decision and their cup exit, which came in just their second-ever appearance in the FA Cup’s third round, Weaver was full of praise for his team’s performance, especially considering they were supported by a record 4,000-strong traveling contingent from North Yorkshire.
Weaver added, “I’m immensely proud of the whole evening. The players were fully committed, and it was a massive occasion for us.
There were nerves, but once they settled in, they gave everything, especially in those critical moments. It was a fantastic atmosphere, and I’m proud of every individual in our team.”
