Kris Boyd has been outspoken about Rangers’ poor away form, which is increasing the pressure on Philippe Clement.
To his credit, the Rangers manager hasn’t shied away from the criticism either.
After the 3-1 Scottish Premiership victory over St Johnstone—an event overshadowed by protests and a walk-out by the Union Bears—Clement admitted he could “understand” the frustrations of fans at full-time.
However, with just three away wins from 11 matches this season, Boyd has explained why Rangers supporters are fully justified in voicing their discontent.
The former Ibrox striker also offered some simple advice to Clement if he hopes to restore his reputation with the fans.
Boyd sympathizes with Rangers fans “There’s no doubt about it,” Boyd said when discussing a possible “disconnect” within the club on Sky Sports. “I think a lot of fans probably had a go at the Union Bears as well. There’s definitely a disconnect.”
“Rangers won today, which is something to build on. It gives them the chance to get another home win on Wednesday against Aberdeen. But the key thing for Rangers is improving their away form. That’s vital.”
“They have absolutely no chance of winning the league if they don’t fix it, but to rebuild that connection with the fans, they need to start winning away games. The fans spend a lot of money and expect better.”
“You can say whatever you want, but if you’ve had enough, you’re going to voice it.”
Boyd’s advice for Clement Boyd also offered a straightforward solution to Rangers’ troubles: they need to start winning away from home.
While the team’s home record is impressive, having secured 31 points from 33 this season—only dropping points in a 1-1 draw with Dundee United—Rangers’ away form has been dismal, with just 13 points from 33 possible. This has led many fans to call for Clement’s departure.
Boyd, however, believes the issues at Rangers run deeper than this season’s away results. He pointed to a long-standing decline that has affected the club.
“Win football matches,” Boyd said when asked how Rangers can turn things around. “It sounds simple. There are many factors that need to align for that to happen, but Rangers fans have been watching this decline for some time.”
“There was a high after winning the league, but there has been a drop since then. I know they had a European final, but the standard of play has dropped.”
“Rangers need to improve their recruitment and start winning games because the fans won’t accept where they are right now, that’s for sure.”
