Vitor Pereira has had a positive start as manager of Wolves, but the real challenge to secure Premier League survival begins now.
Pereira has earned seven points from a possible 12 in his four Premier League matches, with his only loss coming against Nottingham Forest last week. He also guided Wolves to a 2-1 FA Cup victory over Bristol City, securing their spot in the fourth round where they’ll face Championship side Blackburn Rovers.
Dave Edwards praised Pereira for fielding a strong team in the FA Cup, but emphasized that while a cup run is exciting, securing Premier League survival remains the top priority.
Wolves will face European hopefuls Newcastle United on Wednesday night, and Pereira will be strengthened by the return of key players Nelson Semedo, Matheus Cunha, Craig Dawson, and Mario Lemina. However, pundit Chris Sutton still expects Newcastle to triumph, as the team begins a tough run of fixtures.
Pereira, meanwhile, is feeling the pressure of the demanding fixture schedule. Since his arrival at Molineux, he’s made a positive impression on both players and fans, and the club’s prospects are much brighter than when Gary O’Neil was in charge, with genuine hope of avoiding relegation.
However, Pereira now faces one of the most challenging stretches of his managerial career, with Wolves set to play five top-tier clubs in their next five Premier League matches: Newcastle, Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Liverpool. This daunting run has left the manager with sleepless nights. He told Wolves’ official website, “If I think about the next six games, I think I will not sleep – but I need to sleep and rest! We need to focus on Newcastle. Newcastle is the most important game, because it’s the next one.”
He added, “We need to have confidence inside us. I don’t believe in ‘Supermans,’ it’s about 11 players against another 11. We always have a chance. If we play with the right energy, commitment, team spirit, and courage, we can win.”
Pereira is approaching the upcoming fixtures one at a time and remains confident that, despite the tough odds, Wolves can pull off surprises against some of the league’s best teams.
The 56-year-old has also reflected on the difference between managing in Brazil and the fast-paced nature of the Premier League. In Brazil, he recalled having more time to reset during the game, but in England, the action is relentless, and even a small mistake can have significant consequences.
“I spoke with Andre about this, because when he was in Fluminense, I was in Corinthians, and we talked about the difference,” Pereira said. “In Brazil, when you have a throw-in, you have time to think. You can breathe, you can rest a little, you can calm down. But here, if you have a free kick or a corner, if you lose focus for 10 seconds, you could be losing 1-0. That’s the difference.”
“The game here never stops. You always have to think quickly. But that’s something I love – you need to stay connected and always be one step ahead.”
