“We have to” – Ruud van Nistelrooy reveals his plans for January following disastrous six-game losing streak.
Leicester City are drawing closer to relegation after suffering another defeat, this time to Crystal Palace midweek.
Ruud van Nistelrooy replaced Steve Cooper as Leicester’s manager in early December. His tenure began promisingly with a 3-1 victory over West Ham United, but subsequent results have been disappointing, including a 2-2 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion.
Since that stalemate, Leicester’s form has taken a turn for the worse, with their most recent setback being a 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace. This defeat is particularly damaging, as Palace is also battling relegation this season.
With Leicester now two points from safety and having played one more match than the team in 17th place, their survival hopes rest largely on a productive January transfer window.
Van Nistelrooy addressed Leicester’s transfer strategy following the Palace defeat. He confirmed that they are exploring options but stressed that there are no updates on new signings yet.
He said, “We have to see what is possible. We’re trying everything we can, but at this moment, there’s no news on new arrivals.”
Leicester have already signed Woyo Coulibaly from Italian club Parma on a four-and-a-half-year deal. The right-back, who can also provide cover at left-back, is expected to help address Leicester’s defensive weaknesses.
However, Coulibaly alone is unlikely to be enough to halt the club’s slide toward relegation. Fans will be hoping for more reinforcements in the coming weeks.
In terms of potential signings, Leicester have been linked with a new goalkeeper after Mads Hermansen’s ongoing injury issues.
Initially expected to be sidelined for only a few weeks, Hermansen’s injury may be more severe than anticipated. Additionally, Leicester are reportedly interested in signing Valentin Gomez, with a move to Cruzeiro falling through.
The club is also said to be targeting a midfielder, with Sean Longstaff mentioned as a possible target, given his limited playing time at Newcastle United.
