Rangers chairman Fraser Thornton has criticized the team’s poor away form under manager Philippe Clement.
The Light Blues have won only three of their away matches this season, failing to secure a victory in eight games, and trailing Celtic by 16 points on the road. In contrast, their home form has been solid, remaining unbeaten in 12 games. However, the struggles away from Ibrox have significantly impacted the club’s overall performance this season.
In a speech shared by the Daily Record on January 17, Thornton acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, particularly away from home. He stated, “We all know that results have been nowhere near good enough. It’s undeniable and well-understood. Home form has been okay, but away is horrendous.”
Thornton also addressed the prospect of a managerial change, saying, “The easy thing would be to just say, ‘Let’s change the manager and move on.’ But if you step back and reflect, it’s been season after season of underperformance. It’s been 10 years, not just one or two. It’s a decade of disappointment.”
Clement is certainly under pressure following a difficult season in the Scottish Premiership, with many fans calling for a managerial change. Despite this, he still appears to have Thornton’s backing, especially considering the team’s positive home performances and their success in the Europa League.
However, with a string of disappointing away defeats to teams like St Mirren, Aberdeen, and Kilmarnock, Clement’s future may depend on improving results on the road. Thornton’s comments suggest that, for now, Clement’s job remains secure.
