Bid already submitted: Spurs hold talks to sign the next Harry Kane
This season has been challenging for Tottenham Hotspur and their supporters.
On the bright side, under manager Ange Postecoglou, the team remains in three cup competitions. However, in the Premier League, they have lost more games than they’ve won, and their position is closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League spots, marking a disappointing start to the season.
Despite this, the club clearly supports Postecoglou’s long-term vision, and with the right signings to complement emerging talents like Archie Gray, Mikey Moore, and Lucas Bergvall, there’s potential for a promising future. If the right moves are made, this season could eventually be seen as a mere setback.
Daniel Levy and the board seem to share this outlook, as recent reports suggest that Tottenham is eyeing a highly promising young striker, who has drawn comparisons to Harry Kane, and could be acquired for a fee lower than what they paid for Dele Alli in 2015.
Tottenham’s Pursuit of a Talented Striker
According to a recent report from Tottenham News, Spurs are very interested in St Patrick’s Athletic striker Mason Melia.
After having an initial £1m bid rejected earlier in the season, Tottenham has continued to monitor the young talent and remains keen on signing him.
However, they will need to increase their offer to £2m, as that is the value the Irish club has placed on Melia. While this is a significant amount, it is still much lower than the £5m paid for Dele Alli back in 2015.
Although it may cost more than they anticipated, given Melia’s performances this season and his potential, Spurs should consider paying the asking price, especially with the comparisons to Kane already starting to surface.
Why Spurs Should Move for Melia
The comparison to Kane stems from talent scout Jacek Kulig, who referred to Melia as the “Irish Harry Kane” back in April. While this comparison might be made in jest, there is merit behind it.
Despite being just 16 for much of last season, Melia impressed with seven goals and two assists in 35 mostly substitute appearances, totaling 178 minutes. This works out to an average of a goal involvement every 193.11 minutes, which is highly impressive for a teenager competing with senior players.
This season, Melia has featured in six games during the Europa Conference League qualifiers, including two matches against Turkish club Basaksehir, who claimed the Süper Lig title five years ago.
Additionally, he has played three matches for the Irish U-19 team, scoring one goal in 112 minutes, adding to the ten goals and three assists he accumulated in 22 U-17 games.
While there is undoubtedly some risk in signing a young player from a league with a lower UEFA ranking, the growing buzz around Melia suggests that for the price being discussed, Spurs might want to take a chance. With the comparisons to Kane already surfacing, this could be a move worth considering.
