David Moyes praises two Everton stars but reveals what must be ‘eradicated’ after Tottenham victory
Everton secured a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, moving four points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.
David Moyes praised his team’s performance, marking his first win since returning as manager. Although the scoreline suggested a closer contest, Everton dominated in the first half, taking a 3-0 lead. Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring with his first goal since September, followed by Iliman Ndiaye, who capped off a well-executed move. In stoppage time, Archie Gray scored an own goal to give Spurs a glimmer of hope.
Everton had chances to extend their lead in the second half, with Calvert-Lewin sending a shot wide. Spurs threatened a comeback when Dejan Kulusevski pulled one back in the 77th minute, and former Everton player Richarlison scored in stoppage time. However, the Toffees held on to claim all three points, securing their first Premier League win in seven games and moving further away from the relegation zone.
Moyes expressed his satisfaction with Calvert-Lewin’s performance, as well as Jesper Lindstrom, who was a constant attacking threat down the wing. However, he also highlighted the need to address Everton’s tendency to lose possession cheaply in the second half. The manager said: “I think I’m just beginning to settle, getting back into the role. I’m really pleased to give the fans something to cheer about. They nearly weren’t going home happy for a while because we played so well in the first half. We scored three and had a couple more chances, one of which the keeper saved onto the post. The first-half performance was excellent.
“Our goal was to get the fourth, but with Tottenham’s attacking quality, we knew they would put us under pressure. Dom had a chance to make it 4-0, but overall, he played very well today, and it ended up being a great win for us.
“I thought the goals were really well taken, and Jesper did well with his assist for the third, even though it ended up as an own goal. The second goal was great team play, and Ili got his chance to score. Overall, I’m really pleased with the three points. It didn’t matter how we played as long as we won.
“We’ve used Dominic as an example. He had three chances in midweek, and today he scored, which will give him a lot of confidence. The whole team looked better today, played well, passed well, but we need to cut out the mistakes. We gave the ball away too often, especially in the second half, and that’s something we need to eradicate.”
