“Is £12m Enough to Sack Ange Postecoglou? Daniel Levy Faces Shocking Decision
Tottenham Hotspur would reportedly need to pay around £12 million to part ways with their head coach, Ange Postecoglou.
Postecoglou, who signed a four-year contract when he joined Spurs from Celtic nearly 18 months ago, is facing growing pressure with the team currently 15th in the Premier League. They are only eight points clear of the relegation zone and nine points from the top half of the table.
Although Tottenham won the League Cup, they have not won a league match since mid-December, and their injury list continues to grow. Up to twelve first-team players were absent for Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Everton, with Radu Dragusin also adding to their problems by suffering a head injury during the match.
These ongoing issues are adding to the pressure on Postecoglou, with calls for his dismissal increasing as the poor results persist. While Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy would ultimately make the decision, severing ties with Postecoglou before the halfway point of his contract would be a costly move.
Former Aston Villa and Everton CEO Keith Wyness recently explained the financial implications of parting with Postecoglou. “As I understand it, he’s 18 months into a four-year deal earning about £5 million per year,” Wyness told Football Insider. “It would cost around £12 million to get rid of him now. It’s a significant sum, and there could also be compensation owed to any new manager.”
Wyness also noted that, given the circumstances, it’s likely Postecoglou will be given the rest of the season to turn things around. “The pressure is certainly mounting,” he added.
Following the Everton defeat, Postecoglou vowed to “keep fighting,” stating, “I haven’t lost belief, and I haven’t lost any determination to turn it around. In the second half, the players showed they are not giving up either, so we will find a way through this.”
