“Lacking”- Daniel Farke explains why Wilfried Gnonto is not starting games for Leeds United at the moment
Wilfried Gnonto has started just one of Leeds United’s last six Championship matches, with Dan James and Manor Solomon currently favored in the starting lineup. Daniel Farke has explained the reasoning behind this decision.
After starting 19 of the previous 21 Championship games, Gnonto’s form has declined, leading Farke to leave him out of the starting XI in five of the last six matches. Gnonto was involved in nine goals earlier in the season, but his last contribution—either a goal or an assist—came in the win over Middlesbrough on December 10, marking his only involvement in Leeds’ last 10 league games.
With Manor Solomon and Brenden Aaronson both doubts for Wednesday’s match against Norwich City, Gnonto could be given another opportunity to start, potentially in a wide role or as a No. 10.
Farke addressed the decision to drop Gnonto, emphasizing that it’s a natural part of the season. He praised Gnonto’s progress, noting that he has become more responsible and professional. “He has my trust. Sometimes in the Championship, you experience a dip in form – you can’t play all 46 games. I’m happy with his development. He’s much more lively, adventurous, and less predictable compared to last season. The only thing missing is the end product, but that’s something he can improve on.”
Despite fewer starts recently, Gnonto has still logged more minutes than both Solomon and James. His numbers this season indicate that, while he may be more involved, his goal and assist contributions are not as frequent as those of Leeds’ other wingers. Farke’s comments about his lack of end product are valid, as Gnonto takes longer to register goals or assists compared to his teammates.
Whether Gnonto starts against Norwich is still uncertain, but with a crucial match against Burnley approaching next Monday, Farke may rotate his squad to keep players fresh.
