Former Rangers player Cedric Itten has cautioned his Young Boys teammates not to concede an early goal when they face Celtic, warning that Parkhead will be “on fire” as the Hoops aim to extend their 62-year unbeaten home record against Swiss clubs in European competition.
Itten, a 28-year-old Swiss international, returns to Glasgow for the Champions League clash after two years at Ibrox, where he made limited appearances.
He started just eight league matches and was loaned to German club Greuther Furth during his second season. Despite this, Itten scored nine goals for Rangers, including two in European matches against Lech Poznan and Royal Antwerp before leaving for Young Boys in 2022.
Having played in two Old Firm derbies, Itten has warned his teammates about the intensity of Celtic’s home atmosphere, especially as the club nears qualification for the next stage of the Champions League.
Celtic has an impressive record at home against Swiss sides, with eight wins and just one draw in European competition over the past 62 years. Itten said: “The stadium will be packed with 60,000 fans, and they are extremely loud! They stand and cheer for every play.
You have to be strong at the start and avoid conceding in the first 15 minutes. If you do, the stadium will erupt. I will make sure my teammates know that.
Celtic are very strong. I still follow the Scottish league, particularly the Old Firm derbies. Celtic are ahead of the rest. They will give everything and play at full intensity.”
Itten also compared Parkhead to another iconic European venue, Galatasaray’s Ali Sami Yen Stadium, where Young Boys achieved a 1-0 victory in August. He remarked: “The atmosphere at Galatasaray was similar to Celtic’s.
You could hear the noise there, just like at Celtic Park. Our fans are less vocal compared to Galatasaray’s, but fair play is a different story in Scotland. It’s tough knowing we’re at the bottom and still have no points. We are determined to earn points in the last two games.”
