Glasgow Rangers were left heartbroken in the Europa League on Thursday night as a late Bruno Fernandes goal handed Manchester United a 2-1 victory, dashing the hopes of Philippe Clement’s side.
Both teams were fighting for crucial points to enhance their chances of finishing in the top eight and securing a spot in the last 16. United took the lead early after a Jack Butland mistake, and it seemed like they were heading toward an easy victory.
However, with only two minutes remaining in regular time, Harry Maguire’s error presented Cyriel Dessers with an opportunity, and the striker made no mistake, firing a shot into the corner of the United net to equalize.
Yet, there was more late drama when Fernandes found space at the far post and scored the winning goal off a cross, sealing the points for Manchester United.
Although a few Rangers players impressed, including some youngsters who got valuable playing time, there were significant underperformances, with Jefte notably struggling.
Despite Butland’s unfortunate own goal, it was full-back Jefte who made a critical error late in the match. With the game winding down, he lost track of Fernandes at the back post, allowing him to score the winner unchallenged.
One of the most disappointing performances came from Nedim Bajrami. The Albanian, who had shown promise since joining Rangers, was largely ineffective against United. Playing as an attacking midfielder behind Hamza Igamane, Bajrami was barely involved in the game.
He completed just 13 passes, had only 25 touches, and failed to create any chances or make a key pass. He also lost possession seven times, leading to criticism of his performance.
With such a lackluster display, Bajrami could lose his starting place for the upcoming Scottish Premiership match against Dundee United. Ianis Hagi, who was not included in the Europa League squad, could step in to replace Bajrami in the starting XI. Rangers’ manager will be hoping for an improved performance from the 25-year-old, as several young players, including Bailey Rice, Zak Lovelace, and Findlay Curtis, are pushing for spots in the first team.
Despite the loss, Rangers can still secure a place in the knockout playoffs with a strong performance in their final Europa League match next week.
