“It’s BIZARRE. I’ve never seen it either, never seen that before”- Troy Deeney cannot believe ‘Bizarre’ Rangers incident v Manchester United
Troy Deeney criticized Jack Butland for his blunder in Manchester United’s opening goal against Rangers in their Europa League clash, calling it a “stinker.”
The former striker slammed the goalkeeper after Butland accidentally scored an own goal during the match at Old Trafford on Thursday, January 23.
Cyriel Dessers managed to equalize for Rangers in the 88th minute, but Bruno Fernandes scored in stoppage time, securing a 2-1 win for Manchester United.
Commenting on the incident during a talkSPORT broadcast, commentator Jim Proudfoot said, “It’s bizarre. I’ve never seen anything like it, but it’s an own goal by Butland, and Man United are 1-0 up.”
Deeney responded, “That’s a great explanation, but for anyone listening, Butland’s had a stinker.”
Butland, who rejoined Old Trafford for the first time since moving to Rangers in 2023, had hoped to make an impact after a few weeks out of action. With the 31-year-old sidelined, Liam Kelly had stepped in and performed well in goal for Rangers.
The defeat means Rangers are now likely to be heading into the Europa League play-offs, despite having a chance to secure a knockout stage spot at Old Trafford. However, the performance provided some positives, with the team nearly securing a point. The late lapse in concentration ultimately cost them.
Despite the loss, Clement’s position may not be under as much scrutiny, given Manchester United’s status as one of the top clubs in the world. Rangers’ hierarchy, including Patrick Stewart, will also be mindful of the fact that the Belgian manager was missing several key players for the match, though the situation’s future remains uncertain.
In other Rangers news, Diogo Dalot was involved in a peculiar moment at Old Trafford during the game.
