Fabian Hurzeler was enraged after Iliman Ndiaye converted a controversial first-half penalty, which helped Everton secure a 1-0 victory over Brighton and move seven points clear of the relegation zone.
Everton manager David Moyes marked his 700th top-flight match with a win, as Ndiaye capitalized on a handball decision against Brighton’s Joel Veltman following a VAR review.
Brighton players and supporters felt that Veltman had been fouled as he tried to clear the ball with his right hand while going to ground under pressure from Everton substitute Beto.
However, referee Tim Robinson disagreed, and despite Brighton’s sustained pressure in the second half, the hosts couldn’t equalize.
The Premier League’s matchday center stated: “The VAR reviewed a potential handball by Veltman and deemed it deliberate, recommending an on-field review, which led to the referee awarding a penalty to Everton.”
But Hurzeler strongly disagreed with the decision. “The VAR shouldn’t have been involved in this situation,” he said. “If the referee decides that way, then the game should continue without VAR.”
He also questioned the clarity of the handball. “It wasn’t a clear handball, and there was no doubt about it. He felt the touch, and naturally, his hands reacted, causing the ball to hit them.”
Moyes, on the other hand, defended the decision. “It was definitely a penalty,” he said in his post-match interview. “I understand they think there was pressure from Beto, but that’s his job. In my view, it was a clear penalty.”
He added, “It was a great result for us, really important, especially since we were too close to the bottom. It’s given us a lot of belief. Brighton put us under a lot of pressure, but we got the goal that mattered.”
