Everton were controversially awarded a penalty in the first half of their Premier League match against Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton dominated the opening 45 minutes, but Everton took the lead when Ndiaye converted from the penalty spot in the 42nd minute after Joel Veltman was penalized for a handball in the box.
Veltman, the experienced Dutch defender, argued that he had been pushed in the back and that the handball was accidental as he fell to the ground.
Referee Tim Robinson was instructed to review the incident on the pitchside monitor, and after deliberation, he concluded that Veltman had not been pushed and that the handball was deliberate. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was also reprimanded for his protests.
The Premier League matchday center clarified: “The VAR reviewed the potential penalty for Veltman’s handball, determined it was deliberate, and suggested an on-field review. The referee then awarded a penalty to Everton.”
Earlier in the half, Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was forced to leave the field with what seemed to be a hamstring injury, with Beto coming on as his replacement.
