Joel Veltman Criticizes the Penalty Decision
Moyes has been pleased with Everton’s recent training sessions, especially after their win over Spurs, and those efforts clearly paid off in this match.
The penalty came after a VAR review, which saw Brighton’s Joel Veltman penalized for handling the ball inside his own penalty area.
In his post-match interview, Veltman expressed his displeasure with the decision, claiming that he was caught between two Everton players and pushed from behind, causing his arm to move forward. He also argued that his handball was not intentional, describing it as a reflexive action.
“When you fall, your instinct is to put your hands forward to protect yourself, and that’s what happened,” Veltman explained. “Without the push, I would have headed the ball or cleared it with my feet.”
Despite his frustration, it’s hard to see how Veltman could dispute the penalty after reviewing the footage.
Veltman Critiques Everton’s Defensive Tactics
While Moyes has called for reinforcements during the winter transfer window following a difficult start to the season, he would have been pleased with how his tactical plan worked out at the Amex Stadium.
Everton frustrated the Brighton players, and Veltman made sure to express his discontent with the way the Toffees approached the match.
“Everton are one of those teams that know how to ‘park the bus’ and wait for a counter-attack,” Veltman said. “They rely on breaks, and while we did well in the second half, we couldn’t create clear chances, and that’s something we need to improve.”
