The Premier League has issued a statement regarding the role of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in awarding Newcastle United a penalty during their Premier League match against Southampton.
Eddie Howe’s side entered the match hoping to recover from a disappointing defeat to Bournemouth in their previous game, but the start was far from ideal.
Newcastle found themselves trailing 1-0 after just 10 minutes, with Jan Bednarek scoring for the bottom-of-the-table Southampton. However, about 16 minutes later, Newcastle were given a chance to equalize from the penalty spot, thanks to VAR.
A penalty appeal for a foul by Joe Aribo on Alexander Isak was initially denied by referee Sam Barrott. However, after a review by VAR, the official was asked to check the incident on the pitch-side monitor. Upon further examination, Barrott reversed his decision and awarded the penalty.
Isak stepped up to take the spot kick and successfully converted it. After the penalty decision, the Premier League Match Centre’s X (formerly Twitter) account issued a statement to clarify the reasoning.
“The referee’s initial decision not to award a penalty for a challenge by Aribo on Isak was reviewed by VAR, who determined there was sufficient contact for a penalty and recommended an on-field review,” the statement said. “The referee then overturned his original decision and awarded a penalty.”
The situation improved for Howe’s team just four minutes later when Isak scored again to put Newcastle ahead for the first time. After Josh Murphy won the ball in midfield, he passed to Isak, who calmly finished past goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to make it 2-1.
