“EMBARRASSING”- Kris Boyd and Sutton clash over controversial Diomande red card
Philippe Clement confirmed that Rangers will appeal Mohamed Diomande’s red card, handed out late in their 3-1 victory at Dundee United on Sunday.
Kris Boyd labeled referee Nick Walsh’s decision as “embarrassing,” while Chris Boyd accused Diomande of “slapping” Kevin Holt.
Kris Boyd criticized Walsh for sticking with his red card decision despite being urged to review it on the pitchside monitor, calling it “embarrassing.”
The red card was shown after Diomande clashed with Kevin Holt, although the exact offense that led to the card remained unclear.
Despite VAR advising Walsh to review the incident, he maintained his original decision, leaving Rangers manager Philippe Clement frustrated. Clement confirmed that Rangers will appeal the decision.
Boyd, a former Rangers striker, said, “It’s embarrassing. Sometimes, when you go to the monitor, you can be too stubborn.
You’ve got to admit when you’ve got it wrong, and Nick Walsh should have.” He continued, “There’s no excessive force, no brutality, and if I were Rangers, I’d be filing the appeal right now.”
While replays suggested Diomande’s hand may have made contact with Holt’s face as they fought for possession, Boyd added, “It’s a bit inconclusive, even if he slaps him.
There’s no excessive force or brutality. Walsh is right there, and from his angle, it might look like he caught him. It’s inconclusive. I’ve watched it 40 times, and we’re still debating it, which shows it’s not clear.”
Former Celtic striker Sutton took a different stance, saying, “You can’t slap people in the face. He does slap him, and I think he catches him. Nick Walsh was right there, so while we can criticize him, the player also needs to show discipline.
Now Diomande is going to miss a few games. You can’t just go around slapping people. If that’s not a red card, it’s saying any game is a free-for-all.”
Clement, speaking after the match, expressed his disbelief: “I don’t understand at all. We’re going to appeal it. The VAR clearly shared the same opinion, or they wouldn’t have asked the referee to review it.” He added, “In my opinion, it’s clearly not a red card.
If that’s a red, then there will be three or four red cards in every match. My player was pushed and reacted with a small movement of his hand without even touching the opponent. They could both have been given yellow cards, but a red? That’s incredible.”
