Gary Lineker believes Brighton were unfairly penalized after Everton’s match-winning penalty was awarded against the Seagulls at the Amex Stadium yesterday.
Iliman Ndiaye took advantage when Brighton defender Joel Veltman was penalized for handball, following a VAR review.
Albion players and fans felt Veltman was fouled as he used his right hand to deflect the ball while going to ground under pressure from Everton substitute Beto. However, referee Tim Robinson disagreed, and despite sustained second-half pressure from Brighton, the hosts were unable to find an equalizer.

The Premier League matchday center posted: “The VAR reviewed a potential penalty for handball by Veltman and deemed it a deliberate action, recommending an on-field review. The referee then awarded Everton a penalty.”
The game, which had been dull, sparked controversy just before halftime. After initially awarding a corner, referee Robinson pointed to the penalty spot after reviewing Veltman’s handball on a pitch-side monitor.
Seagulls fans, who felt a free-kick should have been given to their team, jeered as the incident was replayed on big screens inside the stadium. Ndiaye then calmly converted the penalty into the bottom left corner, before being booked for excessive celebration, mimicking a seagull.
The 42nd-minute penalty was the only on-target shot of a largely uneventful first half, which ended with more boos for the officials from frustrated home supporters.
Veltman, the Seagulls defender, firmly believed he was fouled during the incident. “I was caught between two players,” he told Premier League Productions. “I was pushed from the right, which moved my hand forward as the ball came.
When you fall, your natural instinct is to extend your hands to protect your head. It wasn’t a deliberate handball; it was a reflex. I would have either headed it or cleared it with my feet if I hadn’t been pushed.”
