The Premier League has issued a statement explaining the reason behind the retake of Bryan Mbuemo’s penalty in Brentford’s victory at Crystal Palace.
The Premier League has confirmed that Bryan Mbeumo’s penalty was retaken after Marc Guehi’s encroachment during Brentford’s victory over Crystal Palace.
In the second half of the match at Selhurst Park, Brentford were awarded a penalty after Nathan Collins was fouled by Maxence Lacroix, with the score still 0-0. Mbeumo’s first attempt, however, hit the post.
But Palace’s celebrations were short-lived when VAR intervened, ruling that Guehi had encroached into the box before the kick was taken, leading to a retake.
On his second attempt, Mbeumo confidently sent goalkeeper Dean Henderson the wrong way and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. Speaking on BBC Radio 5Live, former Wolves player Matt Jarvis suggested that Mbeumo had been lucky: “Wow. That is a real touch of luck for Brentford and Bryan Mbeumo.”
The Premier League later explained that the retake was due to Guehi’s encroachment, stating: “Following Mbeumo’s penalty, VAR determined that Guehi had encroached into the penalty area and impacted an opponent, thus recommending the penalty be retaken.”
The League’s rules on encroachment specify that for a player to be penalized, they must have influenced the outcome of the kick. The guideline states: “When the ball is kicked, if a player has a foot on the penalty area line, including the ‘arc’, they are encroaching.”
“To be penalized, the encroaching player must have had a material impact on the play. For example, if a defender’s encroachment prevents a goal or disrupts the opponent’s ability to play the ball. If the encroaching player has no impact, there is no offence.”
Guehi’s early entry into the box and his subsequent clearing of the rebound from Mbeumo’s initial strike impacted the play, leading to the retake. Some fans humorously noted that if Guehi hadn’t intervened and Mbeumo had scored from the rebound, Palace would have been awarded an indirect free kick instead.
One fan remarked, “The fact that Mbeumo was about to touch the rebound off the post, which would have given Palace an indirect free kick, is even funnier.”
Another fan voiced frustration, stating, “If Guehi hadn’t touched it, Mbeumo would have, which he isn’t allowed to do. VAR should not be involved in missed penalties, it ruins the sport.”
