Ange Postecoglou is reportedly on the verge of being dismissed as Tottenham manager, with UK pundits and the press suggesting his position is increasingly under threat—though parting ways with him would come at a significant financial cost to the club.
A disappointing 2-1 home defeat to relegation-threatened Leicester City has intensified pressure on Postecoglou and his injury-hit squad.
Former Spurs player Jamie O’Hara, a vocal critic of the Australian, called for an “inquest” into the manager’s half-time team talk, after Tottenham conceded two quick goals in the second half.
“It was one of the worst performances I’ve seen. Another shocking result, another shocking performance,” O’Hara said on Sky Sports.
He also criticized the club for failing to strengthen the squad in the transfer window, pointing out that Spurs had only signed a backup goalkeeper despite their ongoing injury crisis.
O’Hara questioned Levy’s leadership, claiming the club wasn’t willing to pay top wages like other Premier League teams. However, O’Hara emphasized that Postecoglou’s on-field decisions are ultimately the manager’s responsibility.
“Ange Postecoglou is out of his depth. His man-management, in-game tactics—everything wasn’t good enough today. He ran out of ideas after the Everton game last week, and we were 3-0 down at halftime.
Against Leicester, we go 2-1 down, and I didn’t see any tactical changes,” O’Hara said. He went on to suggest that Tottenham are in a relegation battle and need to take swift action: “Spurs are in a relegation fight, make no mistake.
You can’t lose 13 games in the Premier League as a Spurs manager. I think he’ll be sacked after the Liverpool game on February 6.”
The press has also sharpened its criticism of Postecoglou. Tom Allnutt of The Times noted, “A game that was supposed to ease fears of relegation brought another dismal defeat for Tottenham, piling on the pressure for chairman Daniel Levy and leaving Postecoglou under immense scrutiny.”
Allnutt pointed to the club’s long injury list and lack of signings, despite a failing season. He highlighted that, with just one win in their last 11 league games, Tottenham’s situation is dire, and the fans’ anger is focused on the board as much as the manager.
Matt Law of The Telegraph echoed these sentiments, suggesting Postecoglou’s position is increasingly precarious with the fans calling for Levy’s departure.
He wrote, “History tells us that when the fans turn on Levy, he usually turns on the manager,” implying that Postecoglou’s job may be in jeopardy.
Jacob Steinberg from The Guardian also warned that the defeat to Leicester could be a turning point.
“Spurs are eight points above the relegation zone after one win in 11 games, and it wouldn’t be surprising if this defeat proves to be the last straw for Postecoglou,” he wrote, adding that much of the venom directed at the club is aimed at Levy’s leadership.
However, sacking Postecoglou would not come cheaply for Spurs. According to The Sun, the manager is earning £5 million a year on a four-year contract, meaning that firing him now would cost the club approximately £12 million.
With uncertainty swirling around Postecoglou’s future, all eyes will be on how Tottenham performs in the coming weeks and whether the club’s leadership will make a change.
