“‘More Chances Than Aaronson and Tanaka Combined’ – Leeds’ Regret as 23-Year-Old Farke Sold in July Now Flourishing as a World-Class Playmaker

Leeds United are in urgent need of an attacking midfielder before the transfer window closes in just six days, but one player they loaned out, Sam Greenwood, is having an impressive season.

In the summer, Leeds allowed several fringe players to leave on loan to secure regular playing time elsewhere, something they wouldn’t have received at Elland Road.

Greenwood was one of the first to depart, joining Preston on loan for the 2024/25 season after Middlesbrough chose not to make his stay permanent.

How is Sam Greenwood getting on at Preston?

It seems Greenwood doesn’t have a future at Leeds, so his best option now is to impress while at Preston, aiming for a permanent move either there or to another club.

So far, his performances have been strong, with five goals and two assists this season, all of which came during a purple patch from late October to late December.

Greenwood has created more chances than Tanaka and Aaronson together

The 23-year-old has also been one of the Championship’s best at creating big chances, registering 11 assists, with only Jordan Clark having more (13) according to Fotmob. His skill with set pieces has likely played a role in this impressive tally.

Greenwood has created more chances than Leeds’ midfield duo, Ao Tanaka and Brenden Aaronson, combined.

For many Leeds fans, the signing of a creative playmaker would be the final piece to make Daniel Farke’s side dominant in the league. This is highlighted by the fact that Tanaka and Aaronson have created just seven chances between them, or nine if you include Joe Rothwell.

While Greenwood may not have fit into Farke’s plans, his ability to create big chances emphasizes Leeds’ immediate need for a creative midfielder. The pressure is on the club to secure a signing before the transfer deadline on Monday.
