Burnley manager Scott Parker has defended his team’s performance in Monday’s 0-0 draw with Leeds United, insisting it was never his plan to adopt such a cautious approach. He explained that Leeds’ tactics ultimately disrupted his attacking intentions.
While acknowledging the lack of goals, Parker praised his side’s defensive efforts, noting that the clean sheet extended goalkeeper James Trafford’s impressive streak to seven consecutive shutouts. Burnley have now conceded just nine goals in 29 league matches this season.
Despite facing criticism for their reserved style against Leeds, Parker stood by his team’s approach, highlighting their strong form.
Ahead of this weekend’s trip to Portsmouth, the former England international commented, “Just last week we scored five goals against Plymouth. Some might expect that every game should be like that, but the reality is football isn’t that simple.
The perception of teams or players based on their league position or names on a team sheet can be very different from what actually happens on the pitch.
“Against Leeds, who are top of the league and average around 1.8-2 xG per game, we managed to limit them to just 0.37 xG. I understand people might point to the fact we didn’t score, but we can’t ignore what we achieved defensively.
The narrative can quickly shift to us being a ‘boring team’ after one goalless draw, but it wasn’t our intention to play that way.
We wanted to make a statement and replicate our performance against Plymouth. We didn’t manage that in terms of attacking, but defensively, what we did was impressive.”
Parker added, “While we didn’t pose much of a threat in attack, we’re committed to improving that part of our game.”
