Sunderland’s transfer target, Marcus Edwards, is now in “advanced talks” with Championship promotion rivals Burnley.
Over the weekend, reports indicated that Sunderland were considering a move for the 46-goal winger. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Burnley are in “advanced talks” to sign Edwards during the winter window.
He added, “Burnley are in advanced talks to sign Marcus Edwards from Sporting, with negotiations now at the final stages. Scott Parker, a key factor in Edwards’ decision, as they were teammates at Tottenham.”
Edwards has been with Sporting since 2022, joining from Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes. Before his move to Portugal, he developed at Tottenham and had loan spells at Norwich City and Dutch club Excelsior.
Recently, his playing time has been limited, with only 346 minutes across all competitions this season, including a 68-minute appearance in a Champions League loss to Arsenal in November.
Along with Sunderland and Burnley, several other English clubs, including Crystal Palace and Everton, are reportedly interested in Edwards this January.
Portuguese outlet A Bola has suggested that Sporting is open to selling the winger this month, with offers starting at around £6.7 million. Whether Sunderland is pursuing a permanent transfer or a loan deal is not clear from the reports.
While Sunderland has primarily been focused on acquiring a centre-forward, head coach Regis Le Bris hinted in a recent press conference that the club might also be interested in a more versatile attacking player. He explained, “We probably still need more vertical threats, players who can run behind.
This could be a striker or a winger, maybe a versatile player. So, this is still in our mind, but we’ll see what opportunities arise in the coming weeks. It’s not necessarily about a number nine.”
