“Total inconsistency, this is 100% nailed on penalty kick, and a rash tackle that has taken out the attacker”- PGMOL asked to take action after incident in Everton 4-0 win v Leicester City
Keith Hackett has criticized the PGMOL for the “total inconsistency” in officiating after Everton’s penalty appeal was rejected in their 4-0 win over Leicester City.
The Toffees secured an easy victory at Goodison Park on Saturday (1 February), with one player in particular shining. However, Everton felt they should have been awarded a penalty in the first half when Jannik Vestergaard appeared to push Beto off the ball inside the box.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News about referee Darren Bond’s decision to wave away the appeals, former FIFA referee Hackett said: “That was a rash tackle that took out the attacker. This is a clear-cut penalty, 100%. I’m amazed neither the referee nor VAR spotted this obvious foul.”
Everton’s 4-0 victory over Leicester has seen them climb away from the relegation zone, with manager David Moyes turning things around. Just weeks ago, the team was in a genuine relegation battle.
Hackett added, “Come on PGMOL, you need to fix this totally inconsistent and inaccurate officiating. You have VAR – what is it doing?”
Thanks to Moyes’ efforts, Everton are now nine points clear of the drop zone with a game in hand. As Andy Gray noted, Goodison Park has become a fortress, with back-to-back wins in recent weeks.
Though the decision not to award Beto a penalty was a surprise, it had little impact on the overall result.
