Newcastle United defender Lloyd Kelly is set to join Juventus on loan after successfully completing his medical in Turin.
The agreement will see Kelly move to the Serie A club with a £20 million obligation for Juventus to make the transfer permanent. This comes just six months after the 26-year-old signed with Newcastle on a free transfer.
Kelly made only four Premier League starts for Newcastle before agreeing to the move to Juventus. On Sunday, he traveled to Turin to finalize the deal and undergo his medical.
An official announcement is expected ahead of Monday’s 11pm transfer deadline.
Newcastle United reporter Dominic Scurr views the move as an “absolute no-brainer” for the club, particularly as they continue to navigate the Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
In a deadline day transfer update, Scurr stated, “We’ll see an outgoing today, with Lloyd Kelly joining Juventus. Earlier in the window, Juventus made a loan offer for Kelly, but Newcastle rejected it, as well as an offer from Fenerbahce. However, as the window drew to a close, Juventus returned with a proposal that is simply too good for Newcastle to turn down.
“Kelly joined Newcastle for free and has made only four Premier League starts this season as a bit-part player. Juventus’ offer includes a loan with an obligation to buy, ensuring Newcastle receives £20 million—an offer too valuable for the club to refuse, especially in light of the Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
“It makes perfect sense for Newcastle. While it leaves them a bit lighter defensively, the team is already well-stocked in that area. Matt Targett has returned from injury to offer left-back cover, and Sven Botman is also back, providing depth in the left-sided centre-back position. Dan Burn is playing there as well, and there are other players who can step into that role. So, it’s a deal that works for everyone.
“For Kelly, it’s a great opportunity to join a major European club after playing for Bournemouth just a year ago. And it’s a good move for Newcastle, too, as they benefit financially from it.”
