Chelsea have reportedly agreed to a deal for Carney Chukwuemeka, who has attracted interest from Everton.
The midfielder is no longer needed at Stamford Bridge for the remainder of the season. Chukwuemeka has made just five appearances for Chelsea in the 2024-25 season, none of which were in the Premier League.
Everton had shown interest in signing the 21-year-old on loan, but a deal has not been possible. The Toffees already have Armando Broja on a season-long loan from Chelsea, and Premier League rules prevent them from taking another player from Chelsea on a temporary basis.
Broja is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, and Everton had discussed the possibility of ending his loan early, but Chelsea have yet to accept the terms.
It’s no surprise that Everton isn’t the only club vying for Chukwuemeka. The midfielder, once considered one of the Premier League’s brightest talents during his time at Aston Villa, joined Chelsea for £20 million in 2022. Now, German club Borussia Dortmund has reportedly reached an agreement to sign Chukwuemeka on loan, with an option to buy for a fee exceeding his £40 million release clause.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the move on X, stating: “Borussia Dortmund agree loan deal for Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea, here we go! Loan move with a buy option included, for a value higher than £40m release clause. Salary covered until June, and loan fee included. Medical on Monday.”
Under David Moyes, Everton has moved nine points clear of the Premier League relegation zone, recording three consecutive victories, including a 4-0 win over Leicester City. With injuries to key forwards, including Broja, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (hamstring), and Youssef Chermiti (thigh), Moyes has made it clear that he needs to bring in a new striker before the transfer window closes. However, with several other Premier League clubs also seeking a number nine, competition for strikers is fierce.
Additionally, Everton is close to completing a loan deal for attacking midfielder Carlos Alcaraz from Flamengo. The 22-year-old, who previously had a spell in the Premier League with Southampton, underwent his medical yesterday.
Moyes has also acknowledged the need to strengthen at left-back, as Vitalii Mykolenko is currently the only recognized option in that position. However, Everton’s ability to make further signings is being impacted by Premier League profit and sustainability rules.
