Done Deal Imminent: Crystal Palace’s deadline day move for £50m player is ‘imminent,’ with the club agreeing a loan deal and a medical scheduled at Selhurst Park, reports Fabrizio Romano.
Crystal Palace are on the verge of completing an early deadline day move after reaching an agreement with Chelsea.
Oliver Glasner, the manager of Crystal Palace, was thrilled with his team’s performance following their 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The win pushed Palace above Manchester United in the standings and kept them three points ahead of Tottenham, who triumphed 2-0 at Brentford.
The timing of the victory was significant, as it came just before the transfer deadline, with Palace aiming to secure a last-minute signing to strengthen their defense.
Since their 5-1 loss to Arsenal before Christmas, Palace has kept five clean sheets in their last eight matches, conceding only four goals in the remaining three games, with a 2-1 defeat to Brentford being their only loss during that period.
Despite their solid defensive record, the club is looking to further bolster their backline with reports indicating that Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell is set to join on loan.
Chilwell’s move confirmed
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, a medical for Chilwell at Palace is scheduled for Monday, with the 28-year-old left-back set to finalize the move. Both The Telegraph and Sky Sports have also confirmed the deal. Chilwell has struggled for game time at Chelsea, having only featured in a Carabao Cup win over League Two Barrow in September. The former Leicester City player was signed by Chelsea for £50m in 2020 and has experienced several managerial changes during his time at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca commented earlier this month on Chilwell’s lack of playtime, stating, “Players want to play more, so there are opportunities for them to leave. Ben has been top, very professional, and works hard. I feel bad about the situation, but his behavior has been exemplary.” Maresca further explained his decision to leave Chilwell out of the lineup, saying, “It’s my choice. I see players like Malo Gusto, Reece James, and Marc Cucurella fulfilling different roles in matches. Ben is a top full-back, but I struggle to see him adapting in the same way as others.”
Glasner praises defense after Manchester United win
Following the victory over Manchester United, Glasner expressed his pride in his team’s defensive efforts. He said, “I’m absolutely delighted. The players were outstanding. It was the kind of game we anticipated. We had some tough moments, especially at the beginning of the second half, where we needed Dean Henderson and his two crucial saves. But overall, we defended excellently as a team and limited their set-piece opportunities. We knew we would get chances, and at halftime, we reminded the players to stay patient, and that’s exactly what happened. Our first goal came from a set-piece, and then we defended well and waited for our transition. Adam Wharton started the move with a one-touch pass to Ismaïla Sarr, and then Daniel Muñoz made an incredible 80-yard run in the 85th minute, with JP Mateta finishing off the move to seal the win. It was a fantastic performance.”
In other transfer news, Chelsea and Tottenham are reportedly close to agreeing on a loan deal for defender Axel Disasi, though the move is not without complications.
