Done deal: Wolves strike loan exit agreement with Birmingham City’s League One rivals
Wolverhampton Wanderers have agreed to send striker Tawanda Chirewa on loan to Huddersfield Town, who are rivals of Birmingham City in League One.
The Zimbabwean forward will spend the remainder of the 2024/25 season at Huddersfield after the agreement was finalized on transfer deadline day.
Chirewa had previously been loaned to Derby County for the first half of the season, but he made only five appearances in the Championship, four of which were as a substitute.
Wolves recalled him from Derby, and since then, he has not featured in their plans, partly because a move away was necessary to facilitate another loan opportunity.
Both Wolves and Huddersfield have confirmed the loan move, with the expectation that the 21-year-old will gain more regular playing time at League One level.
Huddersfield, currently fifth in the league, are aiming for automatic promotion to the Championship, with Chirewa potentially playing a role in the team’s push.
Although Huddersfield is somewhat on the fringes of the promotion race, Chirewa could influence Birmingham City’s progress as they compete for promotion.
Chirewa, who is versatile and can play as a center-forward, attacking midfielder, or in other forward roles, should be an asset to Huddersfield in their pursuit of a higher league position.
The Terriers are currently 11 points behind second-placed Wycombe Wanderers, with a game in hand, and will be keen to close that gap.
Under former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil, Chirewa made his senior debut last season, appearing in 10 matches for the club. Despite not scoring, he showed his potential, particularly during Wolves’ injury crisis. He now has a chance to prove himself further at Huddersfield.
Chirewa is not the only Wolves player heading to League One. Reports suggest Barnsley are close to finalizing a loan move for defender Dexter Lembikisa, who has had previous loan spells at Rotherham United, Heart of Midlothian, and Yverdon Sport.
Barnsley, currently 10th in League One and just outside the play-off positions, are in need of a right-sided defender and are hopeful a deal for Lembikisa can be completed before the transfer deadline.
