Mathys Tel wasn’t the only player Tottenham Hotspur signed on deadline day. As reported yesterday, the club also focused on acquiring young talent to strengthen their academy.
Tottenham has now confirmed the signings of three 18-year-olds: Dan Batty from Manchester City U21, Luca Furnell-Gill from Liverpool U21, and Reiss-Alexander Russell-Denny from Chelsea U21.
Batty, an attacking midfielder, played for City’s FA Youth Cup team last season.
Furnell-Gill, a central defender, developed through the Preston North End academy before joining Liverpool two seasons ago.
Russell-Denny is a central midfielder in Chelsea’s academy and has represented England at U17, U18, and U19 levels. His parents clearly have a fondness for hyphens and compound names.
While I can’t provide extensive details about the players, it’s clear they were brought in to strengthen the Spurs U21 squad, which has struggled after losing several key players from the team that won the PL2 last season. Are they any good? Hard to say! However, they seem talented enough to potentially be loaned out to lower-league teams for a modest profit. In the meantime, they’ll have the opportunity to learn and develop at one of the UK’s top training facilities.
And you never know — one of these young players might break into the first team. That’s the gamble with investing in youth.
