Matheus Cunha opens door to joining new club after Wolves ‘agreement’
Matheus Cunha is eager to move to a bigger club, despite recently signing a new contract with Wolves, sources have told Football Insider.
The 25-year-old was on the radar of several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest, during the January transfer window. However, Cunha opted to sign a four-and-a-half-year deal with Wolves, which includes a £62.5million release clause, protecting his value at a time when the club has faced financial challenges.
Sources suggest that top Premier League clubs are likely to show renewed interest in Cunha during the summer transfer window if he continues his strong performances in the second half of the season. It is believed that Cunha insisted on having the release clause in his contract to keep the door open for a move to a bigger club, as he aims to play in the Champions League.
Although the new contract gives him the potential for a future move, Cunha will remain integral to Wolves’ efforts to avoid relegation this season.
Cunha has scored 11 goals and provided 4 assists in 24 appearances across all competitions this season. He has started 21 of those matches and is the club’s top scorer under manager Vitor Pereira.
The forward joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid on an initial loan two years ago, with the move becoming permanent for a reported £44million after an obligation to buy was triggered. Wolves currently sit 17th in the Premier League, just two points above the relegation zone with 14 games remaining.
