“HORRENDOUS”- Jamie Redknapp says Tottenham did something ‘horrendous’ v Liverpool that he’s never seen before in his life
Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of reaching the League Cup final were dashed in a heavy 4-1 aggregate defeat to Liverpool.
Heading to Anfield with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, Spurs were expected to battle hard to secure their place in the final. However, they were overpowered by a determined Liverpool side eager to make up for their loss in the previous match.
Cody Gakpo put Liverpool ahead in the 34th minute, and Tottenham were fortunate to only be trailing 1-0 at halftime.
The second half saw further misery for Spurs as Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Virgil van Dijk all found the net.
Jamie Redknapp, a former player for both Tottenham and Liverpool, was left stunned by Spurs’ performance, describing it as something he had never witnessed before.
Redknapp Criticizes Tottenham’s Lack of Fight at Anfield
On Sky Sports, Redknapp expressed disbelief at Tottenham’s lack of fight in such an important match. He couldn’t fathom how Spurs failed to register a single shot on target and called the scoreline “horrendous.”
“I can’t remember a team in my lifetime going down with less fight than Spurs did today,” he said. “Not having a single shot on target in a semi-final second leg when you’re trying to change the course of your history?”
He added, “There have been some tough moments – against Palace, Ipswich, and Everton this season. But when you look at the scoreline today, it’s just horrendous.”
Redknapp further criticized Spurs’ performance, saying: “We expected more from Tottenham tonight. I can’t understand how they didn’t manage a shot on target in the semi-final. I know it’s tough, especially with a one-goal lead going into Anfield, but in the first half, they tried to play out from the back. The goalkeeper was nervous, and the midfield showed no courage to take control. It was an abject performance, and it wasn’t just from the inexperienced players, but the experienced ones too.”
Postecoglou Reflects on Tottenham’s Defeat
After the match, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou admitted that Liverpool were simply “too good for us” and that his side struggled to compete throughout the game.
“They were the better team tonight, and they fully deserved the victory,” Postecoglou stated. “We just couldn’t find a foothold in any area of the game, defensively or with the ball.”
He continued: “We allowed them to get into the game, and we didn’t show the aggression needed. We didn’t start well, which let them settle in, and once they were comfortable, it was hard to get back into it.”
