62 goals in just 31 league outings, worth more than with Buendia with 710% increase: Leeds struck gold on a star who’s worth more than Buendia
The January transfer window proved to be relatively quiet for Leeds United, as they were unable to bring in any new players to boost their Championship promotion bid.
Despite Daniel Farke targeting numerous players to strengthen his squad, no deals materialized, and he had to settle with the current roster. Cameron Archer was one player heavily linked to the club in the final days of the window, but given Southampton’s position in the Premier League, it was unlikely they would part with the striker.
However, the lack of new additions hasn’t seemed to hinder Farke’s side, as they secured all three points against Coventry City just days after the window closed, further boosting their chances of returning to the Premier League.
Leeds’ Failed Pursuit of Emi Buendia
One name that was persistently linked with Leeds throughout the month was Aston Villa’s Emi Buendia, who became available for a loan move.
The Argentine joined Villa in the summer of 2021 for a club-record £33 million, with hopes of elevating their attack and pushing for a European spot. However, injuries and a drop in form saw him fall out of favor at Villa Park.
Leeds, aware of his success under Farke at Norwich City—where he netted 15 goals and 16 assists in the 2020/21 Championship campaign—were among the clubs interested in signing him.
However, Buendia ultimately moved to Bayer Leverkusen on loan for the rest of the season, leaving Leeds disappointed at missing out on a player who had flourished under Farke’s guidance.
Leeds’ Impressive Attack Despite Missing Buendia
Despite not securing Buendia, Leeds’ attack has been impressive throughout the 2024/25 season, scoring 62 goals in just 31 league matches, the highest in the division.
Their average of two goals per game highlights their attacking prowess, with several key players contributing to their success.
Wilfried Gnonto, in particular, has stood out, registering five goals and five assists in 29 league appearances under Farke.
The 21-year-old was rumored to be moving to Saudi Arabia in January, but no deal materialized, allowing Leeds to retain his talents for the remainder of the season.
Gnonto’s £3.8 million move from Swiss side FC Zurich now seems like an incredible bargain, especially given his rapid rise in value.
His performances have seen his market value soar to €37 million (£30.8 million), an increase of 710% from what Leeds paid for him just under three years ago.
This valuation is now higher than that of Buendia, who is currently valued at €18 million (£15 million) due to his injury struggles.
Although Gnonto has found it harder to secure starts in recent weeks, his increasing market value is a testament to his potential.
His price tag is only likely to keep rising as he continues to develop, and he remains a key figure in Leeds’ push for promotion, capable of making an impact both as a starter and off the bench.
