Tottenham Hotspur face a period of introspection following their surprising 4-0 loss to Liverpool in the League Cup on Thursday night, which saw them exit the competition.
Spurs entered the match with a 1-0 advantage after a solid first-leg performance at home, but they were completely outplayed at Anfield. Liverpool dominated the game from start to finish.
Cody Gakpo put Liverpool ahead in the 34th minute, during a first half that was largely one-sided. Mohamed Salah then converted a penalty early in the second half, overturning the tie. Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk added further goals to seal the win.
Jamie Redknapp did not hold back in his criticism of Tottenham, describing the scoreline as “horrendous” and blaming their lack of fight. The former Spurs and Liverpool player also singled out three Tottenham players he felt were poorly supported by their teammates.
Redknapp expressed sympathy for Djed Spence, Archie Gray, and Lucas Bergvall, noting that young players should be protected. He was particularly shocked by Spence’s role, as he was tasked with playing “14 different positions,” and felt Gray and Bergvall lacked leadership around them.
“I feel sorry for those players,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports. “Djed Spence played 14 different positions tonight, I’ve never seen anything like it. You’re meant to protect young players like Archie Gray and Bergvall. They’re doing their best, but they needed guidance from the experienced players, and they didn’t get it.”
Former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson also criticized the performance, stating on Sky Sports: “It was really, really damaging. I knew it would be tough, but I expected more fight. There was no character, no desire to defend, and no effort to keep the ball out of the net. To lose 4-0 without a shot on target is a damaging performance.”
Stephen Kelly, another ex-Spurs player, echoed similar sentiments on BBC Radio 5 Live, saying: “It looked like men against boys.”
