“Idiot”- “Alan Shearer’s Jaw-Dropping Comment About Jordan Pickford That Left Micah Richards Totally Baffled

Everton’s season has been a bit of a rollercoaster, but they’ve shown signs of a recent resurgence.

David Moyes’ return to Goodison Park has helped the Toffees move away from the relegation zone, giving them a nine-point cushion. However, injuries and difficulty in scoring have posed significant challenges.

Despite this, Moyes has not dismissed the possibility of relegation, even with the team’s improved form in recent weeks. One area that has been a relative bright spot for Everton, though, is their defense.

The Toffees have conceded the joint fourth-fewest goals in the Premier League, with just 28 goals allowed in 23 games.

One defender who has particularly impressed Alan Shearer is goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Alan Shearer Praises Everton’s Jordan Pickford
Michael Owen has also praised Pickford this season, with the England goalkeeper performing strongly for Everton. Pickford has kept the second-most clean sheets in the Premier League this season, trailing only Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels.

During an appearance on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer selected Pickford for his ‘Premier League draft’ alongside Micah Richards and Gary Lineker.
“I’m going for Jordan Pickford. He’s one clean sheet behind Sels, but I think the way Everton play gives them more chances for clean sheets than anyone else,” Shearer said.

Lineker quickly responded, “Yeah, but it’s not Everton he’s playing for in your team, is it?”

Richards didn’t hold back, simply calling Lineker an “Idiot!”

Both Shearer and Lineker have been impressed with Pickford’s performances this season, especially considering his past tensions with the Newcastle United fanbase. Despite the team’s struggles, Pickford has remained a steady presence in goal for Everton.

Pickford Has Changed Shearer’s Opinion
Just weeks ago, Shay Given criticized Pickford as “erratic” following Everton’s draw with Chelsea in December, showing just how much Shearer’s view of the England number one has shifted.

Shearer had previously expressed concerns about Pickford’s place in the England squad, particularly after the 2018 World Cup.

“I’m worried for him England-wise now. He was outstanding at the World Cup in Russia and should be making the shirt his,” Shearer said in 2019.
“But even the basic saves he tries to make look spectacular. Everything seems to be an issue. He’s not a kid anymore. There comes a time when you’ve got to do the simple things right.”

Now, Pickford has firmly established himself as England’s first-choice goalkeeper, and Shearer’s opinion of him has evolved significantly in recent years.
