Daniel Farke may need to make a change at half-time if Leeds United are to overcome Millwall in the FA Cup on Saturday.
Frustration filled the air at Elland Road on February 8th as a weakened Leeds side struggled against their Championship rivals during the first half.
With only three shots on target, the opening 45 minutes were reminiscent of the defeat to Burnley in late January, an unusual sight for a team packed with attacking talent.
Although Joel Piroe, Brenden Aaronson, and Manor Solomon were rested for the FA Cup match, Largie Ramazani, Wilfried Gnonto, and Mateo Joseph were expected to lead the charge. However, their lackluster performance left them trailing 1-0 at half-time following Femi Azeez’s goal, putting them on the brink of elimination.
Mateo Joseph Should Be Subbed at Half-Time Mateo Joseph has seen his role reduced in recent weeks, with Piroe now the preferred choice as center-forward, but he was given a chance to prove himself against Millwall.
Joseph’s lack of recent form is concerning, with only one goal in his last 23 appearances, and that form continued at Elland Road. The 21-year-old barely had an impact, touching the ball just 14 times [FotMob], and most supporters were calling for Piroe to replace him.
When the ball did come his way, his passing accuracy of just 50% resulted in Leeds losing possession in the final third, which eventually led to them being punished.
Leeds United Can Afford FA Cup Exit While Farke will be reluctant to lose any match, the primary focus at Elland Road remains on securing promotion to the Premier League. The FA Cup is a secondary concern at this point in the season.
This is why Farke fielded a weakened side, including Josuha Guilavogui and Sam Chambers, but the decision could backfire if Leeds lose momentum in their promotion bid.
With less than an hour left in the game, Leeds are on the verge of being knocked out of the competition. If Farke wants to progress to the next round, changes must be made.
