David Moyes must make the tough decision to sell James Tarkowski in the summer to kickstart an Everton rebuild and invest in younger defensive talent, especially with the club’s upcoming move to the Bramley-Moore Dock stadium.
Tarkowski had a disastrous performance in Everton’s 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth, which saw them eliminated in the fourth round.
The English defender joined the Toffees in July 2022 on a free transfer after Burnley’s relegation. While Tarkowski has been a reliable figure for Everton, amassing over 100 appearances and offering leadership and defensive stability, now seems like the right time for Moyes to part ways with the veteran center-back.
In the loss to Bournemouth, the goals came from an Antoine Semenyo penalty in the 23rd minute and a Daniel Jebbison strike in the 43rd minute.
Tarkowski was at fault for both, first conceding the penalty with a reckless challenge on Semenyo and then losing possession late in the first half, allowing Jebbison to add a second.
It was a poor first-half showing from the two-cap England international, who will have just a year left on his contract come summer.
David Moyes Must Move On from Tarkowski The Defender Has Shown Signs of Decline
Tarkowski’s usual composed defending was missing in action at Goodison Park, and Moyes will be thankful for the presence of Jarrad Branthwaite, who had a solid game alongside him, covering for Tarkowski’s mistakes.
The 32-year-old was beaten in three of five ground duels, failed to make a clearance, and was dribbled past twice. His performance made it all the more difficult for Everton to cope with the energetic Bournemouth attack.
With the new ownership of The Friedkin Group and the club in need of a squad overhaul, Moyes and the board should seriously consider selling Tarkowski.
Offloading his reported £100,000-a-week wages could help free up financial resources for more strategic signings.
Tarkowski has been costly on multiple occasions this season, including giving away a penalty in a 0-0 draw against Newcastle in October, a mistake that was only salvaged by a save from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Everton made a move for Irish center-back Jake O’Brien last summer, and he could be a long-term solution to partner Branthwaite in the future.
Moyes recently praised O’Brien’s attributes, emphasizing that his future lies in central defense despite his temporary role as a full-back due to squad limitations.
With the £800 million investment in the new Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium, Everton needs to be mindful of their finances. A Tarkowski sale could signal the beginning of a new era for the club, aligning with Moyes’ and the owners’ vision of a fresh project as the Toffees embark on their new chapter.
