Newcastle Target Shocking Signing That Could Break Their Transfer Record – And Cost More Than Sandro Tonali
Newcastle United are set to sign a centre-back in the summer of 2025, after failing to do so in the past two transfer windows.
In the summer of 2024, the Magpies’ pursuit of Marc Guehi ended in disappointment as they were unable to secure a deal with Crystal Palace despite dedicating significant time to negotiations.
They didn’t revisit Guehi in January and instead targeted Abdukodir Khusanov, but the 20-year-old defender eventually joined Manchester City.
Newcastle also showed interest in Juma Bah and Vitor Reis but lost out to City once again.
Now, Newcastle’s recruitment team is exploring other options, and one potential target is Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen.
TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey shared with Geordie Boot Boys that Newcastle has been monitoring the 19-year-old’s progress at the Vitality Stadium.
Huijsen is having an impressive debut season in the Premier League and has a release clause that could see him leave Bournemouth after just one year.
Bailey said, “Newcastle will definitely be bringing in a central defender this summer.
They’ve lost Lloyd Kelly to Juventus, and Jamal Lascelles could be leaving when his contract expires.
They’ll have a healthy budget going into the summer, especially if they secure a Champions League spot.”
He added that Newcastle had been keeping an eye on Huijsen even before his move to Bournemouth. “They know him well and have been impressed with him since he arrived at Bournemouth, but they’re not the only ones interested.
Bournemouth doesn’t want to sell, but there is a clause in Huijsen’s contract that would allow him to leave for over £55 million, which is a significant amount to pay in one go.”
Huijsen Could Become One of Newcastle’s Most Expensive Signings
If Newcastle is serious about signing Huijsen this summer, it will require a hefty outlay, as his release clause is over £55 million.
That would make him more expensive than Sandro Tonali, who was signed in the summer of 2023 for £55 million, making him Newcastle’s second-most expensive signing ever.
However, Huijsen would surpass Tonali in terms of price, despite being available for a much cheaper fee last summer.
At that time, Bournemouth secured the centre-back from Juventus for an initial £12.6 million, making it an incredible bargain.
The Magpies missed out on this deal and may now have to pay a premium if they pursue Huijsen this summer.
Regardless of the cost, Huijsen would be a valuable addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.
